At Landmark Dodge of Morrow, we may soon explore traditional hybrid powertrains as a cost-effective alternative to plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles! Matthew Nyquist, Jeep’s vice president of global product planning, shared insights in an interview with Automotive News, highlighting that hybrids like the Toyota Prius, which provide fuel savings without the need for charging, could attract budget-conscious buyers.
“With plug-in hybrids, you're dealing with both an engine and a substantial battery, which adds to the cost,” Nyquist noted. “So, traditional hybrids are something we’re looking at across all segments to find the right balance between affordability and fuel efficiency for our customers.”
Jeep has already added a traditional hybrid option to its Avenger subcompact crossover, currently available overseas with gas, hybrid, and electric options. The Avenger’s hybrid model combines a gas engine with an electric motor, delivering all-wheel drive by powering both front and rear axles.
In the U.S., Jeep currently offers plug-in hybrids in models like the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe, and the company is expected to introduce a series of plug-in hybrids starting with the Wagoneer next year. In this system, the gas engine primarily charges the battery, which powers the vehicle’s electric drive.
Even as the EV market shifts, Jeep is steadfast in its commitment to expanding its electric lineup in the U.S. The brand has already introduced the Wagoneer S, with the Recon soon to follow. Jeep is also developing an electric Renegade, targeting a price point under $25,000, which aims to make electric driving accessible to more customers.
Additionally, Jeep plans to launch an electric Wagoneer later this decade, underscoring its commitment to offering a wide range of EV options for loyal fans and new customers. Nyquist did not specify a timeline for the potential U.S. debut of Jeep’s traditional hybrids. He did highlight Stellantis’ interest in the lower costs associated with these smaller battery systems compared to plug-in hybrids.
He noted that hybrids have become popular across various market segments in the U.S., which could make this move a strategic addition for Jeep to remain competitive. This exploration of traditional hybrids aligns with earlier statements from Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa, who hinted at a possible hybrid variant for the Recon—Jeep’s anticipated electric SUV for the U.S. In a May interview with Autocar, Filosa confirmed that Jeep is considering alternative powertrains for the Recon, excluding pure internal combustion.
This follows the introduction of the Wagoneer S, expected to reach showrooms later this year as Jeep's first U.S. EV. The shift towards traditional hybrids would add another layer to Jeep’s electrified offerings, which already include the popular Wrangler 4xe. This model has been the top-selling plug-in hybrid in the U.S., and Jeep plans to expand the lineup with a plug-in Gladiator 4xe pickup, as well as the Grand Cherokee 4xe.
These models showcase Jeep’s commitment to reducing emissions while maintaining performance and off-road capability. Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, has also made bold promises, with CEO Carlos Tavares pledging a $25,000 Jeep EV for the U.S. Additionally, the company has confirmed range-extended plug-in hybrid versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer three-row SUVs, illustrating Jeep’s comprehensive approach to electrification.
Through these advancements, Jeep continues to evolve its lineup, ensuring customers have a range of efficient and capable options tailored to modern needs. The 2024 Jeep Wrangler showcases a stunning evolution of the iconic off-roader, expertly blending tradition with cutting-edge innovation. Building upon the acclaimed JL platform, this refreshed model introduces exciting features while remaining true to its adventurous spirit.
The Wrangler's impressive powertrains, including the 4xe hybrid option, deliver a robust 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, enhancing its capabilities on and off the road. With the introduction of the 4xe Power Box, adventurers can conveniently power devices while enjoying the great outdoors. The Rubicon model shines with its new Dana 44 full-floating rear axle, which not only boosts load capacity but also allows for towing up to 5,000 pounds.
Eye-catching upgrades like the factory-installed winch add practical appeal, while the new grille and Gorilla Glass windscreen enhance durability and style. Inside, a 12.3-inch touchscreen offers seamless connectivity, ensuring drivers can navigate with ease, whether they're cruising city streets or conquering rugged trails. The 2024 Wrangler stands as a testament to Jeep's commitment to innovation, all while honoring the brand's storied legacy of adventure and exploration.
